In the cosmetic and skincare industry, there are several ingredients that stand out as harmful. While the list is a mile long, there is a shortened list called 'the dirty dozen' that outlines a select few harmful chemical ingredients. Some of the heavy hitters include petroleum, parabens, and PEG compounds. So why are PEGs such a common choice of ingredient and why would they appear on this list?
What Is A PEG?
PEGs, polyethylene glycol, is a petroleum-based ingredient that is often used as a thickener, moisturizer, skin softener, delivery method, and emulsifier. All of which are very important aspects to creating a desirable product. The function/purpose of the PEG is determined by the molecular weight and the polymer attachment. The lower number following PEG, the lower the molecular weight. Examples would include PEG-8, PEG-20, PEG-100.
The smaller the molecular weight of the PEG the more successful the penetration of the ingredients within the product. For example, if there is a product packed full of impurities the PEG would allow for these ingredients to move even deeper into the skin; thus, compromising the health of the skin at a dermal level and disrupting the natural barrier function. An unhappy barrier function leads to unbalanced moisture and a multitude of other issues.
Not only do PEGs act as a vehicle for other harmful ingredients, the manufacturing process often contaminates the ingredient with compounds such as ethylene oxide, a World War I nerve gas component, and 1,4 dioxane, a known human carcinogen. There is a way to remove the impurities from the PEG itself, but the verification that the PEG has gone through this process is difficult.
In addition, it has been proven that PEGs are much more irritating to damaged or broken skin. Given that many skin conditions include broken or irritated skin already, it would be safe to say that skincare containing PEGs would only worsen these conditions rather than calm, soothe, or heal.
By avoiding products containing PEGs, the mystery around the ingredient can be avoided as well.
